What type of work can I do?
Job possibilities will depend on your previous work experience and your knowledge
of French. Generally speaking, participants in the Work in France program are usually
offered entry-level jobs in the tourism and hospitality industry, retail stores,
restaurants, pubs, call centers, telemarketing and ski resorts. Other options are
work in basic administration positions or clerical work, promotional work, temporary
work for special events or fairs, factory work or teaching English as foreign language.
How much can I expect to earn while working in France?
Obviously this will depend on the job you take but minimum wage in France is €8.44
(approximately $10) gross per hour. Clerical and hospitality work pays on average
€8.63 per hour.
How many hours per week can I expect to work?
The legal working hours in France is 35 hours per week. Depending on the position,
students may work between 30 and 40 hours per week.
Will I have to pay tax on my earnings?
Yes, you can expect to pay approximately 25% tax on your earnings.
Will I have to pay tax on my overseas earnings in the USA?
Depending on your filing status, the US government requires that you report your
worldwide earnings; however, if you pay tax in France, you can file for a foreign
tax credit in the USA.
How much money should I bring with me to France?
It is a program requirement that you have access to at least €1,500 available on
arrival in France.
How often will I be paid?
Most salaries are paid at the end of the month.
How much can I expect to pay for rent?
Rental costs will vary between €400 (approximate US$500) and €600 (approximately
US$800) per month. Most landlords will also expect a deposit of two months rent.
How much can I expect to pay for groceries and other weekly expenses?
Groceries, local transport and entertainment will cost on average €200 per week.
How far in advance must I apply to the program?
We must receive your complete application a minimum of 4 weeks prior to your intended
departure from the USA.
