Why your help is needed
Strong gender divides exist at the heart of many Indian communities and often leave
women without a solid educational background, with few employment prospects and
little sense of independence. Volunteers on this project have the opportunity to
work in community centres that have been specifically established to give women
and girls the education that could bolster their future employment opportunities,
thereby challenging culturally-imbedded gender inequalities.
Volunteers can get involved in taking a variety of classes that could help improve
women’s employment prospects, from conversational English to computing. In addition
to instilling valuable skills and understandings, teaching and mentoring efforts
go a long way to improving women’s confidence and self-esteem, which many sadly
lack due to the minimal opportunities they have had access to.
Volunteers also help create and launch creative health awareness campaigns that
address the importance of local health concerns, such as breast feeding, safe sex,
proper hygiene, and Iodine Deficiency Disorder amongst young children.
